Welcome to Year 3!
This is an exciting year for our children as they take the next step in their learning journey and make the transition from Key Stage 1 into Key Stage 2. We look forward to helping them settle into their new routines, build their confidence and develop as increasingly independent learners. Year 3 brings lots of new opportunities, challenges and experiences, and we are excited to see the children grow in confidence, curiosity and independence throughout the year.
This year, the children will move onto the Renaissance Reading Scheme, which allows them to choose their own reading book from an appropriate range based on their reading ability. The main focus is on developing their understanding of what they have read. At the start of the year, children will complete a Star Reader test, which assesses their reading and comprehension skills and provides a suitable range of book levels for them to choose from.
We encourage parents and carers to support children in taking their time with their books rather than rushing to finish them in order to complete a quiz. Understanding and remembering what they have read is much more important than simply finishing a book quickly, as this will help them achieve success in their quizzes. After each successful quiz, where children achieve 80% or above, they will receive a raffle ticket. These tickets are entered into a prize draw at the end of each half-term, providing an extra incentive to read carefully and enjoy their books.
Whilst most children will join the Renaissance scheme, some children will continue using the Rising Stars reading scheme until they are ready to move across. The main difference is that the quizzes for Rising Stars books can be found at the back of the book. Raffle tickets are awarded on the same basis, with children receiving a ticket when they achieve 80% or above in their quiz.
