Mental Health and Wellbeing
At the William Alvey, we are committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our
pupils and staff so that they can all realise their full potential and cope with life’s many challenges.
We take a whole school approach to promoting positive mental health so that our children can be resilient, happy and successful. We nurture a mentally healthy environment through promoting our core values of resilience, tolerance, aspiration and respect. Our Growth Mindset approach teaches children how to be resilient and understand that mistakes are part of learning. Children learn about mental wellbeing and are supported to understand their emotions and feelings better through PSHE lessons, Collective Worship and throughout the school day in other curriculum areas.
The children have also created their own Wellbeing Charter (see photo), which is followed across all of our classes. The charter reflects what the children believe is important in creating a positive classroom environment — kind, fun, safe and respectful. These priorities are truly created by the children, for the children, and provide a shared language and set of expectations for everyone.
Children regularly take part in activities and discussions that help bring the charter to life. They explore how to use kind words, share, take turns and look after one another, while making sure everyone feels included and welcome. They also consider how to keep each other safe, including respecting boundaries, listening to others and addressing bullying or unkind behaviour. Alongside this, children are encouraged to have fun, be creative, work together and celebrate learning, helping to create classrooms where everyone can feel happy, valued and able to thrive.
In addition, more targeted support is offered by staff in school, including our Pastoral Manager (Mrs Laura Taylor). Children may receive 1:1 or group sessions attending interventions like Feelings Detectives and Sensory Circuits. External agencies such as the Mental Health Support Team also offer support to our pupils when appropriate.
If you have any concerns about your child's mental health and wellbeing, please share them with us, either in discussion with their class teacher or by contacting our Mental Health Leads, who are also Mental Health First Aiders - Mrs Laura Taylor and Mrs Emma Weston.
